Water Without Power
A submersible well pump needs electricity. When the power goes out, so does your water. A well hand pump gives you a way to draw water from the same well with no power at all.
That matters most on rural properties, where outages can last and animals still need to drink. It is also a good backup for anyone who just wants a plan. A generator works too, but it needs fuel, has to be hooked up correctly and may not be running when you need it. A hand pump is simple and always ready.
Choosing a Well Hand Pump
We install Bison hand pumps. In many wells, a hand pump can share the well with your existing electric pump, so you keep normal water day to day and use the hand pump only when you need it.
- Backup water for drinking, cooking and flushing during outages
- Livestock water when the barn loses power
- No fuel needed, unlike a generator
Whether a hand pump fits depends on your well’s water level and setup. We will look first and give you a straight answer, even if that answer is that a generator makes more sense for your place.
In-Well Hydrants and Stand-Alone Hydrants
In-well hydrants
An in-well hydrant is installed at the well itself, giving you a frost-protected spigot right at the well head. It is handy for filling tanks and hoses without running a line to the house.
Stand-alone yard hydrants
A stand-alone hydrant sits where you need water: a pasture, a garden or beside the barn. It drains below ground when shut off, so it holds up through freezing weather. It also saves a lot of hose dragging: instead of running a hose from the house every morning, you walk out and lift a handle. We handle the trenching and water line to get water out to it.
Built for Farms and Rural Lots
Much of our work is on farm country and larger acreage. Hydrants and hand pumps come up often in Catlett, Catharpin, The Plains and Marshall. If you are adding livestock or a big garden, it can also be a good time for a well inspection and flow test so you know what the well can supply. Livestock need water every day, and a frozen trough in January is a real problem. Planning where the hydrant goes, with pasture gates and chores in mind, makes life easier for years.
If your electric pump is struggling or old, we also handle well pump repair and replacement. A pump lasts on average 10 to 15 years, depending on the well and its use, so pairing a new pump with a backup hand pump can make sense. More on that in how long a well pump lasts.
