Pressure Problems Are the Usual Call
When a Centreville well owner calls us, it is usually about pressure. The shower goes weak. The pump clicks on and off too often. Or the water spits and sputters, then comes back. Those symptoms can come from the pump, the tank, or the switch, and a free diagnosis sorts out which one.
Most of Centreville is on public water, so this page is for homes on private wells, mostly on the outer edges toward Clifton. We serve well owners in 20120 and 20121.
If you are on public water and your pressure is low, that is a question for your water utility, not a well company. We would rather tell you that than send a truck.
Check Your Pressure Tank First
A tank that has lost its air charge is a common cause of short cycling. You can check it safely:
- Turn the well breaker off.
- Run a cold tap until the water stops.
- Check the air valve on the tank with a tire gauge.
The reading should sit about 2 psi under the low number of your switch setting, so around 38 on a common 40-60 setting. If it is way off, the tank may need service. Our guide on how to check pressure tank pressure walks through it, and pressure tank replacement in Centreville covers what comes next.
Please do not open the pressure switch cover or adjust anything inside it. There is live power in there. Checking the tank air with the breaker off is as far as a homeowner should go.
Well Pump Repair in Centreville, VA
If the tank checks out, the pump may be wearing. On average a well pump lasts 10 to 15 years, depending on water level, depth, water quality, and use. A constant pressure system from Grundfos, Gould, or Myers can keep pressure steady at every tap. Our pump installs carry a 5-year warranty. See well pump repair and replacement and our post on low water pressure on a well.
Other pressure culprits
Not every pressure problem is the pump or tank. A clogged sediment filter, a failing switch, or a leak in the water line to the house can all cause weak flow. A running toilet can even keep a pump going nonstop. We check the whole system first.
