Blue-green stains and acidic water in Fauquier County
Much of western Fauquier sits on hard crystalline rock. Water from those wells can run acidic, with a low pH. The signs are blue-green stains on sinks and tubs, and pinhole leaks in copper pipe over time. An acid neutralizer raises the pH and protects your fixtures. We start with a water test so we know what we are treating. Low pH water can also pull metals like copper or lead into your drinking water, which is one more reason to test.
Other parts of the county have their own issues, like iron, hardness or bacteria. The test sorts that out, too.
Well services in Fauquier County, town by town
Warrenton is the county seat, and low pH water is a common question for homes on wells around it. In Catlett, farm country along Route 28, we set livestock hydrants and hand pumps as backup water. Out by the airport in Midland, we see a lot of pressure tank and short cycling calls. A tank that has lost its air makes the pump start and stop over and over, which wears it out early.
Bealeton, where Routes 17 and 28 meet, gets plenty of testing, softener and iron work. Broad Run has older wells that sometimes need casing repair and a new sanitary cap. Farther west and south we also serve Remington, The Plains and Marshall.
Farms, hydrants and long water lines
Fauquier has a lot of open land, so water often has to travel. We install in-well and stand-alone hydrants for barns, gardens and livestock, and Bison hand pumps for backup water when the power is out. When a line breaks or a pitless adapter leaks, we handle water line repair and trenching.
When the pump or tank gives out
Before you call, a simple check helps. With the well breaker off, run the cold water until it stops, then check the tank air with a tire gauge. On a 40-60 switch, it should read around 38. Other signs of trouble:
- Water pressure dropped or comes and goes
- The pump clicks on and off every few seconds
- The pump will not shut off
- Air spitting from the faucets
- No water at all
We do pump repair and replacement and pressure tank replacement, with a 5-year warranty on pump installs. If the taps are dry, call 703-776-0996. We give no-water calls priority.
After heavy rain
A cracked casing or a poor cap lets surface water in after heavy rain or flooding. After a big storm, it is smart to test for bacteria. If the test comes back positive, we can repair the casing and fit a sanitary cap, then add a UV light if bacteria keeps showing up.
