Animals cannot wait until Monday
On a house lot, losing water is a hassle. On a farm, it is a clock. Horses, cattle and other stock need water every day, and a dry trough in summer heat is a real problem within hours. That is why we treat a Catharpin no-water call the way we do: as a priority, any day, any hour.
Call our emergency line at 703-776-0996 as soon as you know the water is gone. Our emergency no-water service runs 24/7, and no-water calls go ahead of routine work. Tell us about the animals when you call. It helps us understand the urgency and plan the day.
Out of water, or losing it somewhere?
On a big property, the house tap going dry is sometimes the last symptom, not the first. Water can be escaping somewhere between the well and the faucet long before anyone notices. A pump fighting a hidden leak runs and runs, and eventually it may quit or trip the breaker.
Before we arrive, walk the property if you can and look for:
- A soft, wet or unusually green strip across a pasture or yard, following the line to a barn or outbuilding.
- A hydrant that will not shut off fully, or ground that stays wet around its base.
- Water pooling near the well cap, or a hissing sound when you stand close to it.
- A trough float stuck open and overflowing.
If you find a leak on a line you can isolate with a valve, close that valve. If the pump is running with no water reaching the house, turn the well breaker off so it does not run dry. If the breaker tripped, tell us whether it tripped again after one reset. Please do not open the pressure switch cover, touch any wiring, or try to pull the pump.
Emergency well service in Catharpin: lines, hydrants and pitless adapters
A lot of emergency work out here happens in the ground rather than down the well. Properties off Sudley Road (Route 234) and Catharpin Road often have long runs of pipe feeding barns, shops, a second house or a row of hydrants. Every fitting and every length of old line is a place that can fail.
Broken water lines
Our water line repair crew finds and fixes broken lines, and we handle trenching when a section needs to be replaced or rerouted. On an emergency, the first job is getting water back to the house and the animals. A longer fix can follow once things are stable.
Pitless adapters
The pitless adapter is the fitting where the water line leaves the well casing underground. When it leaks, you may see water pooling near the well or hear it hiss. It can drain the system and let surface water near your supply. We replace pitless adapters as part of our line work. Our guide to water pooling near a well covers the signs.
Hydrants
We install and repair in-well hydrants and stand-alone hydrants for livestock and gardens through our hand pumps and hydrants service. A hydrant that leaks underground can keep your pump cycling all night without anyone seeing water.
When the pump is the problem
Sometimes it really is the pump. Pumps last on average 10 to 15 years, and farm demand plus a hidden leak can wear one out sooner. Diagnosis is free, and if the pump is done, we install Gould, Myers or Grundfos with a 5-year warranty on the install. Our well pump repair in Catharpin page goes into more detail.
We also check the pressure tank while we are there. A farm system with a tired tank makes the pump short cycle, and on a property with high demand that adds up fast.
Getting through the outage, and the next one
While you wait, a few buckets or a spare tank of water for stock buys time. Shut off automatic waterers and hydrants so any leak is easier to find, and so the system does not drain again the moment the pump restarts.
For the longer run, many farm owners like having a backup. A Bison hand pump installed on the well lets you draw water by hand when the power is out or the pump is down. It will not run the house, but it can keep animals watered through a rough day. Ask us about it once the emergency is behind you.
Catharpin, ZIP 20143, is farm and acreage country, and we work it regularly. A long line hunt can take longer, and we will tell you plainly if so.
After the water is back
Any time a well or line is opened, bacteria can get in. A test afterward is a smart step, especially if people drink from the same well as the animals. Well water testing in Catharpin checks bacteria, lead, nitrates and pH.
